2012-2013 Common Experience: A Global Odyssey
The Common Experience will focus on the ways individuals and localities in Texas, the U.S. and around the world form part of a complex, interconnected web. Global Odyssey will encourage students, faculty, staff and community to both consider the impact of the United States on the rest of the world and develop a deeper appreciation for how events elsewhere in the world can impact their own day-to-day experiences.
The Book: Where Am I Wearing?
The common reading exploring globalization will be Where am I Wearing: A Global Tour to the Countries, Factories, and People that Make our Clothes by Kelsey Timmerman. The book addresses the complex issues of globalization in order to encourage readers to think globally and act locally.
Author Kelsey Timmerman will be on campus September 27, 2012.
Common Experience
'The Common Experience brings students together to read and engage with a powerful text, explore related themes in University Seminar classes, write responses and reactions to the text in writing courses, participate in related symposia with scholarly panels, hear renowned and respected speakers address the topic, see films related to the Common Experience theme, explore the experience by way of the fine arts, engage in informal discussions in residence halls and coffee shops, and extend the exploration via the avenues of their own choosing.'
